Taken at face value, black superheroes in film are not anything new. We’ve already had Shaq/Superman knock off Steel, Michael Jai White as the demonic Spawn, Anthony Mackie’s badass Falcon in the MCU, not to mention an entire trilogy of Blade films from Wesley Snipes. Listen, I never said that all the black superheroes were in GOOD movies. All of that changes, however, with Ryan Coogler’s emotional, topical, and just plain badass 3rd feature film, Marvel’s Black Panther.
